Spring Is Coming

By ~Alicia~

Spring is in the air, Iris, Crocus, Gerbera Daisies, Tulips and Daffodils are flooding every portal on the market.  They welcome us with open arms.  While looking thru the bounty of spring flowers available, it’s easy to see why Daffodils are the springtime favorite.

They appear to have a will of their own, defying winter and daringly peeking their heads thru the snow.  The golden yellow jonquil, trumpets bursting open, inspires us, announcing to the world that spring has come and winter is at an end.  They are Earths time clock, an illustration of nature signifying rebirth.

The lore surrounding daffodils is not in that they signal all living things that it is time to awaken.  They are a symbol of good luck and good fortune.  While given as a bunch they carry the promise of prosperity and happiness to the receiver, in the same token beware the gift of the single daffodil for it is said to foretell misfortune and sadness.

It seems such a shame that the bloom time for such a beauty is only 6-8 weeks.  If you’re like me sometimes that time is even shorter.  Now some people are very talented and are blessed with a green thumb.  These lucky individuals can grow a daffodil in a drought.  Unfortunately there are others like me, who are destined to have a brown thumb. Give me a healthy, blooming, spring daffodil or any other living spring flower and it chances for survival are slim to none at best.  My children have learned over the years not to give me a "real" plant because it will wither and die before I can even get a cutting for one arrangement.  Luckily for the brown thumb people, (we all know who we are), the world has been blessed with quality silk flowers.  Don't get me wrong I love living plants and can make beautiful arrangements but I've found a new love in silk flowers.

I've found that quality silk arrangements stand the test of time and my brown thumb.  Because of silk flowers I now can enjoy my daffodils and spring flowers for the entire season.  No longer will I worry if I remembered to feed the bulbs or wonder what to do when my flowers go dormant or even if they go dormant or remembering to put the infamous packet of white stuff into the water of my cut flowers.  I now confidently place my silk daffodils on my table with the white lace tablecloth without fear of pollen staining it forever.

Today I love looking around my home, the sun shines thru the windows, my bunches of silk daffodils and other spring silks adorn my tabletops and counters, brightening the room and lightening my heart with each glance.  I am comforted by the knowledge that they will still be just as beautiful tomorrow.  Yes, spring is here and for me it’s thankfully silk and Always in Bloom.
